This is for DMs who don’t mind toying with balance and who enjoy creating new magic effects and weapons. But why does a magic weapon always have to be someone else’s first? Why can’t the players be the first ones to forge or possess an artifact-level weapon? That’s the question we’re going to be addressing today, how to allow the players to have magic weapons that are completely their own. There’s nothing wrong with this trope, I use it all the time to dramatic effect. However, why are the most powerful magic weapons always artifacts of a forgotten age? You see this trope all the time: in the far past, there was a war, there was a kingdom, there was a civilization, gods walked the earth, etc… This idea that long ago magic was much more prevalent and powerful than it is now, and anyone who can find relics of the past will be granted unimaginable power.
